For Gingrich, it's a struggle to stay on message

(AP) ? As he scrambles to stop a slide in Iowa, Newt Gingrich's strategy amounts to this: hammer home a message about jobs and the economy while wrapping himself in the mantle of Ronald Reagan. But the loquacious former House speaker keeps struggling to stay on message.

On a 22-stop bus tour of Iowa, Gingrich finds himself unloading on his GOP rivals and reviving talk of a Greek cruise that nearly sank his campaign earlier this year. He fields questions about his work for mortgage giant Freddie Mac, ethics allegations and whether his three marriages make him a polygamist.

The economy? Jobs? Those issues sometimes have been lost in the mix.

"It's been wild and woolly," Gingrich acknowledged to a voter as his wife, Callista, collected a double cappuccino at a Sioux City coffee shop.

If there was ever a time when Gingrich has needed the discipline he's long lacked, it's probably now, as polls show his support tumbling in Iowa in the wake of a storm of ads assailing him as a Washington insider who used his influence to line his pockets.

He now trails rivals Mitt Romney and Ron Paul in Iowa and even if he does manage to score in the top three in Tuesday's caucuses, he doesn't have the money or the organization at this point that those two opponents do as they prepare to go the distance in the state-by-state march to the GOP nomination.

Gingrich argues that his economic pitch is the key to victory, and he doubled down on it Thursday ?or at least tried to.

He appeared in Storm Lake with noted Reagan economist Art Laffer, who praised Gingrich as "far and away the best person to bring this county back to prosperity." Gingrich outlined his tax-cutting economic proposal and implied he was the heir to Reagan's supply-side vision. But he also strayed into long-winded digressions on the federal government's regulation of particulate matter load and conflict in the Strait of Hormuz.

His trademark spray of ideas leaves some voters impressed ? but overwhelmed.

"He has so many," said Ruth Lawlor, 76, who came to hear Gingrich speak at a chocolate store in Algona this week. "It's hard to keep track."

Gingrich's predilection to go for the jugular also has tripped him up, earning his self-described "positive" campaign headlines that he didn't want.

In an interview on CNN this week, Gingrich took the bait.

He not only blasted Romney and Paul but used some of the most incendiary language of the campaign so far. Romney wasn't "man enough" to own up to the negative attacks launched at Gingrich. And Paul was "totally outside the mainstream of every decent American."

Just days later, Gingrich seemed to be suffering from selective amnesia.

"The strategy of focusing on jobs and economic growth, staying positive and being pretty relentless in answering questions at every meeting is working," he said Thursday.

At his campaign events, Gingrich encourages his audiences to fire away with questions about allegations made in attack ads.

In recent days, he's been asked about an ethics fine he paid as speaker and his work for Freddie Mac.

"I don't understand numbers with all those zeros," said a man in Thursday's crowd, referring to the $1.6 million Gingrich's company earned from Freddie Mac.

Gingrich explained that he didn't take in all that money himself and that he fought to increase regulations and not increase funding for the government-sponsored entity.

The candidate argues that such forums give him an opportunity to set the record straight on issues that have been distorted. But they also dredge up the controversies, even as he seeks to put them behind him.

One example came in a telephone town hall meeting Wednesday night when a caller likened Gingrich's three marriages to polygamy.

"Jesus very specifically states in the Bible that divorced people are really still married, which I think technically means now that you're a polygamist, and I'm wondering what you'll do to legalize polygamy in the U.S. if you were to be elected president," the man said.

Gingrich labeled the question "fairly unusual" and said he would oppose any effort to legalize polygamy.

The former Georgia congressman acknowledges his tendency to stray off script.

At Mabe's Pizza in Decorah he was asked why his Republican rivals have been so eager to embrace government intervention in the economy.

He paused and an impish smile crept across his face.

"I'll just get in trouble," he said.

MANDEVILLE, La. - Four teenagers in Mandeville were robbed by men armed with a baseball bat while sitting in a parking lot on Lakeshore Drive Tuesday night, according to the Mandeville Police Department.

At 10:33 p.m., the victims, between 18 and 19-years-old, were in their car in the 2200 block of Lakeshore Dr. when the suspects yanked the door open and demanded money.

The victims gave the suspects approximately $87 before the thieves fled in a light colored sedan.

The victims caught part of the license plate as it turned on to Coffee Street and called the police.

Investigators were able to compile a list of possible suspects from the partial license plate, police said.

On Thursday, police arrested Fidell Johnson, 22, on an armed robbery charge.

A warrant based on an armed robbery charge has been issued for Austin Jenkins, 17.

Video immaturity: Nate Diaz not a fan of cowboy hats or Donald Cerrone

Aside from watching 500-plus pounds of muscle hit the stage at the UFC 141 weigh-in today, the staredown between Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone should be epic, if not a bit violent.

Yesterday's staredown at the final press conference resulted in Donald Cerrone's cowboy hat flying 10 feet in the air. Check out the video (NSFW) to see the aftermath with 20-somethings, Nate and his brother Nick, talk about who's really the puss in this case.

For Cerrone, he loves being the bully and thinks he's in Diaz's head.

"He is the guy that punks everybody else and gets in everyone else's head, so now what happened? The tables turned, and now I'm in your head, you little (expletive)," Cerrone told Adam Hill of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "It feels good to turn the tables, to think that he came out hard and wanted to be a bully and now I'm bullying him."

Cerrone wasn't totally calm about Thursday's minor fracas. That was $1,000 cowboy hat that Diaz was messing with.

This is shaping up as a very solid card with the Cerrone-Diaz beef leading into a good main event between behemoths Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem.

Oops: Droid 4 makes an early appearance in Best Buy promo

With its backlit keys and shaved corners, it could only be the Droid 4 leading the pack of phones in this Best Buy promo shot. The slider hasn't yet reached the shop floor, but that hasn't stopped it from promoting the big box retailer's Rewards Zone offers. While Verizon has already let a festively-colored Droid RAZR and a pair of Xoom 2 Xyboard tablets out of the gates this winter, keyboard hunters have been left out in the cold. Hopefully, this snafu will translate into a release very soon.

Officials said the fire, which was reported shortly before 5 a.m., killed two adults and three children. Two others escaped. Their names have not been released. (AP Photo/Tina Fineberg)

(AP) ? An uncle of three girls killed with their grandparents in a Christmas morning house fire said Wednesday family members are devastated by the tragedy but comforted by each other and an outpouring of public sympathy.

Campbell Badger said that his brother Matthew Badger was devoted to his daughters. He says their family appreciates the prayers and support it has received.

"Matthew is devastated," Campbell Badger said Wednesday. "He's doing as best as can be expected under the circumstances."

Matthew Badger hasn't commented publicly since 10-year-old Lily and 7-year-old twins Grace and Sarah died of smoke inhalation along with their mother's parents, Lomer and Pauline Johnson.

Lomer Johnson also suffered a blunt head and neck trauma, which could have resulted from a fall or being hit by an object, according to the medical examiner.

Matthew Badger and the girls' mother, Madonna Badger, are divorcing, and he was not at the home when it was engulfed by flames.

Authorities say embers in a bag of discarded fireplace ashes started the blaze.

Madonna Badger, an advertising executive and the home's owner, escaped from the fire, as did Michael Borcina, a friend and contractor working on the house. Borcina was released from a hospital on Wednesday morning, a spokeswoman said.

As flames shot from the three-story home, Madonna Badger climbed out a window onto scaffolding, screaming for her children and pointing to the third floor.

Firefighters went into the house twice trying to rescue the victims but were forced out by the blaze's intensity.

Borcina and Lomer Johnson, a department store Santa Claus who spent a long career as safety and security director for a Louisville, Ky.-based liquor company, tried to save them, as well. One of the girls, found dead just inside a window, had been placed on a pile of books, apparently so Johnson could reach in and grab her after he jumped out.

Instead, authorities say, Johnson fell through the roof outside the window and was found dead in the rear of the house. He and his wife, both of Southbury, had been visiting their daughter for the holidays.

A Badger family and Johnson family statement issued by Madonna Badger's brother on Wednesday night said they wanted to express their thoughts and prayers for the people who've been "so deeply impacted by the tragedy on Christmas morning."

"We also want to say thank you for all of the prayers and well wishes that have come in from around the country and the world," said the families' statement, released by Wade Johnson. "We can feel the warmth of your prayers surrounding us as we struggle to cope with the tragic loss of our family members."

The Department of Consumer Protection said its records show neither Borcina nor his company, Tiberias Construction Inc., is currently registered to perform home improvement work in Connecticut. Registration is required by state law and provides certain contractual rights to the consumer, according to the department.

"We do not yet have enough information about what work was being done or had been completed," the agency said. "We will address the pertinent regulatory issues in due course."

Repeated attempts to contact Borcina by telephone since the fire killed the children and their grandparents have been unsuccessful.

Campbell Badger said his nieces were "wonderful, delightful energetic children."

"They were loved tremendously by their mother and their father, who always put their kids first," he said.

He said his brother, a television commercial director who lives in New York, was involved in all aspects of his daughters' lives and played all types of games and activities with them, including soccer, rollerblading and painting.

He said the Johnson and Badger families are grateful for the public support, which has included floral bouquets, stuffed animals and candles left by passers-by at the site of the torn-down Victorian home.

"We are really touched," he said. "Everyone wants to help in any way they can. We feel it, and it's remarkable."

(AP) ? Spain will slide back into recession early next year with the current quarter and the first of 2012 both registering negative growth, new Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said Monday.

De Guindos said he expects the economy ? the eurozone's fourth largest ? to contract by between 0.2 percent and 0.3 percent on the previous quarter in the final three months of this year and again in the first quarter of next year. He said the outlook for next year was poor.

"Let nobody be fooled, the next two quarters are not going to be easy either in terms of growth or employment," de Guindos said.

Spain began to emerge from a near two-year recession last year. It had two successive quarters of growth in 2011 before posting zero growth in the third period.

De Guindos took office last week as part of the new conservative Popular Party government. He said then he was confident the country would emerge from its severe economic crisis and return to prosperity and its former status as a job creator.

Spain has the highest unemployment rate of the 17 countries that use the euro, with 21.5 percent joblessness, and is running a swollen budget deficit following the recession that started with the collapse of a real estate bubble.

The Popular Party won a landslide victory in Nov. 20 elections on a promise to get the economy moving again.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has pledged austerity cuts totaling euro16.5 billion ($21.6 billion) and promised labor reforms.

His government is to begin approving urgent measures Friday, including a freeze on filling new civil service vacancies. except in key areas such as the security forces.

Spain has already made sharp cuts to its national spending and introduced several reforms under the former Socialist government, but the economy has failed to respond.

Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber Top 'Celebs Gone Good'1676499

DoSomething.org's annual list ranks the 20 most charity-friendly stars.
By Terri Schwartz

Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and George Clooney better have received something nice from Santa this year, because they certainly weren't on his naughty list. Those three toplined DoSomething.org's Top 20 Celebs Gone Good, the organization's annual roundup of the most charity-friendly stars in the business.

This is Gaga's second year in a row at the #1 spot. In 2011 she dedicated much of her time to putting an end to bullying and even started a new charitable organization called Born This Way. The "Marry The Night" singer did plenty more to help out those less fortunate in 2011, including auctioning off a nude sketch for charity and performing at the Bill Clinton Foundation fundraiser.

However, this was really Bieber's year to shine. He rocketed up DoSomething.org's list from #10 last year to #2 this year. It helps that Bieber donated some of his profits from his Christmas album, Under the Mistletoe, and his self-named perfume to various charitable organizations. Bieber also kept up his work with Pencils of Promise, a group that has built 41 schools in Laos, Nicaragua and Guatemala and was founded by his manager's brother. Rounding out the top five were Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and Leonardo DiCaprio. This was a year for celeb power couples, with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie clocking at #8, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore at #12 and newlyweds Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert at #14. Other notable standouts this year were Demi Lovato and #10, Lea Michele making her charitable debut at #16, Daniel Radcliffe at #17, Miley Cyrus at #18 and Taylor Swift rounding out the list at #20. What do you think of DoSomething.org's list? Leave your comments below!

Asia stocks mixed after weak US economy indicators (AP)

BANGKOK ? Asian stock markets were mixed in holiday-thinned trading Monday after weak U.S. indicators dulled optimism about prospects for the world's biggest economy.

Several markets were closed including Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia and New Zealand. Oil traders were also on holiday. Wall Street and European stock markets are closed Monday because Christmas fell on a Sunday this year.

Japan's Nikkei 225 stock index finished up 1 percent at 8,479.34 after being closed for a public holiday Friday while South Korea's Kospi fell 0.6 percent to 1,856.70.

China's Shanghai Composite Index shed 0.7 percent to 2,190.11. Markets in India and the Philippines gained while benchmarks inTaiwan and Thailand fell.

Figures showing that U.S. consumer spending and personal income rose by a modest 0.1 percent in November were below market expectations. The headline 3.8 percent increase in durable goods orders last month masked a decline in a crucial investment measure, benefiting from big orders for Boeing aircraft.

The data offset some of the optimism in markets about the U.S. economy following a run of largely positive indicators. Since Thursday, investors have taken heart from figures showing that the number of initial jobless claims in the U.S. unexpectedly fell 4,000 last week to 364,000, the lowest level since April 2008.

While the U.S. economy has been the dominant driver in markets the past few days, Europe's debt crisis is likely to remain the key market focus next year.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 124.35 points, or 1 percent, to 12,294 on Friday in quiet pre-holiday trade. The Nasdaq composite index gained 19.19 points, or 0.7 percent, to 2,618.64. The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 11.33 points, or 0.9 percent, to 1,265.33.

In currencies, the euro was up 0.1 percent at $1.3068. The dollar was down 0.1 percent at 77.96 yen.

ANOTHER ANIMAL: Performance Footage From 'ShipRocked 2011' Cruise

Video footage of ANOTHER ANIMAL ? the side project started by GODSMACK members Tony Rombola on guitar, Robbie Merrill on bass and Shannon Larkin on drums ? performing on the ShipRocked 2011 "music and lifestyle cruise" last month can be seen below.

ShipRocked 2011 set sail from Fort Lauderdale, Florida on November 14 to the tip of Mexico and its popular stretch of gorgeous Caribbean water known for scuba diving, shopping and bars aplenty, and returned five days later.

Although ANOTHER ANIMAL's 2007 debut album failed to interest the public, the group, which also features original GODSMACK guitarist Lee Richards and ex-UGLY KID JOE singer Whitfield Crane, recently released a new song called "Fall Of Rome". Larkin told the Naples News that if the single takes off, a new album could be in the works.

The Pulse Of Radio asked Larkin last year if he thought there would ever be a second ANOTHER ANIMAL outing. "I'm not sure about the ANOTHER ANIMAL project," he said. "You know, we love the record still, we had a Top 10 hit at rock radio and we had a great, great time doing it. But for whatever reasons, the people didn't go out and buy the record so, you know, the label wasn't like, 'You guys got to get back to the studio and make another record!' So it's still out there, and if everybody goes out and buys that record, we'll make another one."

Larkin told Naples News that "Fall Of Rome" is "a heavy, charged track about the recent overthrowing of lame leaders and governments by the ones with the real power: the people. Egypt, Tunisia and now Libya are repeating history before the eyes of the world stage, and this song is like an oppressed person talking directly to an unjust dictator saying enough!"

The drummer added, "If the song does well enough at radio, we will tour in the fall and make a new record as well."

Kindle Fire software update now available

By Rosa Golijan

Amazon

Good news if you own a Kindle Fire: Amazon has issued a software update for the device.?It'll take a bit of time to download and install, but it's worth it thanks to a pile of performance and bug fixes.

According to Amazon, you can either grab the update manually or directly over-the-air. No matter which option you choose though, make sure your device is fully charged before going through the update process. (Oh, and don't forget about making sure you're connected to Wi-Fi if updating over-the-air, of course.)

If you prefer to grab the software update ??which is version 6.2.1, by the way ??over-the-air, you just need to reach for your Kindle Fire, tap the "Quick Settings" icon in the upper right corner, press "Sync" and wait. The update will be automatically downloaded in the background and installed afterwards (while the device is asleep).

The manual approach to the update is a bit messier, but Amazon's got detailed instructions to get you through the process.?All you're basically doing is downloading the new software to your computer and then transferring it to your device. (Keep in mind that the micro-USB cable you'll need to do this is sold separately from the Kindle Fire, but is conveniently the same cable that comes with most non-iPhones these days.)

Once you're done updating your device?? whether manually or over-the-air?? you should be left with?enhanced fluidity and performance, improved touch navigation responsiveness, the option to choose which items are displayed on your Kindle Fire's carousel, and the ability to add a password lock on Wi-Fi access.

RolePlayGateway?

Everyone wants to change the world,
But no one wants to die...
Wanna try?

Look alive, sunshine...

The future is not exactly clear. After the chaotic end of the world, and the nuclear fallout of the land, nobody expected that there would be anything left. But humanity was wrong.

The broken pieces of the world were gathered by one group of civilians, and hoarded. Soon enough, that group evolved into a dictatorship over the leader-seeking world. They forced the people to bend to their will and submit to their beliefs. Calling themselves "Better Living Industries".

At full flare was when the Anti-Believers established themselves. Made up of those few that dared to argue the governing party. Their group might have been small, but it was growing. Most of the members were strong willed, post-apocalyptic hardened, survivalists between the ages of 15 and 30. Older ones and younger ones had reasons for not being with the group. Of course, the older ones had given up on change and thought it was futile. And the younger ones were prohibited from joining.

To attempt to overthrow this group, the government pushed forth the army, with one order. "Take them down and use force if necessary."

Unfortunately for Better Living, in the year 2020, Party Poison and his gang of Killjoys took over Battery City in a brutal fight, crippling BL and forcing them out into the desert where they found a large enough and usable warehouse to attempt to bring BL/ind back into it's feet, they had supplies and a few S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W's sent in from other facilities further out and are surviving on what they have.

Though even though the Killjoys won the battle for Battery, they took a hard hit as well from the other side. Party Poison, Fun Ghoul, Jet Star and Kobra Kid were all killed in that battle, leaving alone one Killjoy successor from the four original. A young woman who goes by the name of Rainbow Apocalypse. A young Killjoys, and a near daughter to the lost Party Poison. She is a last hope for the Killjoys, and nothing short of a leader to them.

It has been two years since then, it is now 2022, and though they are no longer the big bad Better Living they used to be, exterminators are still taking in Killjoys, only to have them either escape with nothing or have reinforcements come and rescue them. While BL/ind struggles to keep it's hold on things, the Killjoys seem to be living it up in what stands of Battery City after their take over. For now Battery City belongs to the Killjoys. But what does BL/ind have in store for them now?

Pull this pin, let the world explode.

? Please don't decide not to join just because you don't think you know enough about the whole Killjoy thing. The dictionary at the top should help, and if you need more information, I will be more then happy to explain whatever you need me to! Just PM me for any questions!
? Profiles will go in the respective thread. Use this one for OOC talk only plz =p

Virgina ballot shows Gingrich campaign woes (Reuters)

ARLINGTON, Virginia (Reuters) ? Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich made a last-minute dash to get on the ballot for the Republican primary in Virginia, in another sign his campaign may not be ready for prime time and could struggle to beat President Barack Obama next year.

Gingrich, who is polling as a frontrunner for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination both nationally and in early voting states, was forced to hold a rally of supporters in Virginia on Wednesday night as he hurries to get the 10,000 signatures necessary to get on the ballot there.

Gingrich and his wife Callista attended the event at a hotel just across the Potomac River from Washington, far from Iowa where voters are less than two weeks away from kicking off the 2012 election season on January 3. Most of his party rivals are already campaigning in Iowa or New Hampshire.

The former House of Representatives speaker has acknowledged that his campaign is behind and hustling to translate recent increased support for his candidacy to organizational capabilities.

Gingrich failed to qualify for the ballot in Missouri and barely made the deadline in Ohio, a key swing state in the general election. About 250 people attended the event in Virginia, where Gingrich said his campaign is "going to turn in vastly more signatures than you need."

By contrast, his main Republican rival Mitt Romney has a bigger and slicker campaign organization. The former Massachusetts governor's staff has already handed in 16,000 signatures to get on the Virginia ballot.

Gingrich said in New Hampshire earlier that his last-minute scramble should not lead Republicans to believe that Romney is a more viable candidate than he is.

"It shows you that a guy who runs for six years and has millions of dollars has a different operational style than the guy who arouses thousands of people," Gingrich said.

Kevin Madden, an informal adviser to Romney's campaign, scoffed at Gingrich's troubles in Virginia, where the former speaker lives in a wealthy suburb of Washington.

"The effort to defeat President Obama in 2012 is of utmost importance to Republican voters," Madden said. "If, like Newt Gingrich, you're just going to casually wing it in a primary campaign, it's an indication you plan to just wing it in a general election campaign.

"We need a nominee who will be organized and disciplined, not scrambling around for ballot access at the last minute."

In Virginia, a candidate has to present at least 10,000 signatures of registered voters, with 400 coming from each of the state's 11 congressional districts.

Gingrich has until 5 p.m. on Thursday to deliver those to the state board of elections in sealed boxes. A spokesman for the board said it recommends that candidates present at least 15,000 signatures - 700 from each district - to ensure legitimacy.

Gingrich said he has enough signatures to meet the requirement. He will hold another event on Thursday in Richmond, Virginia and will hand-deliver the signatures, he said.

Todd Elliott, a Gingrich supporter from Columbus, Ohio, attended the event in Virginia and said he is worried that Gingrich has to spend time in Virginia playing catch-up to Romney on organizational matters.

"There's obviously some concern there," Elliott said. "He should be in Iowa."

Gingrich's campaign all but collapsed last summer when much of his staff quit over questions about management.

If the race goes to many states, as Romney's campaign is anticipating, winning states like Virginia, which holds its primary on March 6, could determine the Republican nominee.

Lara Brown, a political science professor at Villanova University and author of the book "Jockeying for the American Presidency," said Gingrich's late-to-the-party style is "not a reassuring sign for those looking for clues into how he'd act as president."

"Although there is much more to governing than campaigning, candidates must show voters that they are competent enough to run a nationwide presidential campaign if they have any hope of sitting in the Oval Office," Brown said.

Gingrich is an unlikely front-runner as a longtime Washington insider with a history of bombastic, controversial statements, marital infidelity and private-sector work that could be confused with lobbying activity.

The eventual Republican nominee will Obama, a Democrat, in the November 2012 election.

Genomic sequences of two iconic falconry birds -- Peregrine and Saker Falcons -- successfully decoded

ScienceDaily (Dec. 16, 2011) ? A group of scientists from United Kingdom (UK), China and United Arab Emirates (UAE) jointly announced the complete sequencing of peregrine and saker falcons genomes at the 2nd International Festival of Falconry held in Al Ain, UAE. The study is a part of Falcon Genome Project, launched and funded by the Environment Agency -- Abu Dhabi (EAD) in this January. The results will enable biologists to better study the basic biology and genetics of falcons and provide new insights into understanding the origin and populations of these species.

Two particular species of birds, peregrine and saker falcons, are widespread but heavily exploited birds of prey that exhibit migratory habit and are popular hunting falcons commonly found in the country. In particular, the saker is the national bird of United Arab Emirate. In the past century, the two falcons have been listed as endangered species with population decline, caused by a wide range of factors including migration obstacles, environmental changes, habitat loss, use of pesticides (e.g. DDT, PCBs), among others. In the late 1990s, the peregrine has been successfully removed from the endangered species list through the increased recovery efforts, but the saker is still facing this challenge.

Since this January, researchers from UK, China and UAE have been working together to conduct the genomic studies of peregrine and saker falcons, aiming to identify the genome sequences of the two species and enhance their future conservation to face the unforeseen challenge of the rapid changing environments and human activities. Abu Dhabi's Falcon Hospital (ADFH) provided the blood samples collected from male specimens of peregrine and saker falcons, and BGI were responsible for sequencing these samples on its large-scale next-generation sequencing platforms and producing high-quality data output. The bioinformatics analysis is conducted by the scientists from the School of Biosciences, Cardiff University (UK) and BGI.

Dr. Ning Li, CEO of BGI Europe, said, "The complete genome sequencing of the two falcons will lay a solid scientific foundation for identifying the origin and populations of falcons and accelerating the selective breeding of high-quality varieties. We believe we will make more breakthroughs in this project to help researchers better protect these endangered species."

"This study will open the door to an unparalleled understanding of falcon biology and help us to manage and conserve wild falcon stocks in the future" said Dr Andrew Dixon, Head of Research at International Wildlife Consultants Ltd (IWC).

Jaguars' Khan is NFL's first minority owner

Pakistani-born billionaire praised for his 'commitment, his passion and his skill'

New Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan smiles during a news conference at the NFL owners meeting in Irving, Texas on?Wednesday. The sale from franchise founder Wayne Weaver to the Pakistani-born Khan was reportedly for $760 million.

By JAIME ARON

updated 6:02 p.m. ET Dec. 14, 2011

IRVING, Texas - Shahid Khan was 16 when he moved from Pakistan to the United States to attend the University of Illinois. While hanging out in the basement of his fraternity house, he began his American dream of owning an NFL team.

After building a multibillion-dollar company, Khan started working toward spending some of his fortune on fulfilling that college fantasy. He reached out to owners such as Wayne Weaver of the Jacksonville Jaguars to learn the business from the inside, and for them to get to know him.

Khan's dream-turned-plan crossed the goal line Wednesday. He joined the fraternity of NFL owners as his purchase of the Jaguars from Weaver was unanimously approved by the other owners.

The deal is for an estimated $760 million. The ownership transfer will be complete Jan. 4.

"What I want to share with the Jacksonville fans is: Here I am, reporting for duty and ready to serve the fans. Let the fun begin," Khan said with a smile that never left his face during a 20-minute news conference.

The 61-year-old Khan is the league's first minority owner. But that's not the only reason he stands out among his 31 peers. There's also the prominent mustache he's fancied since 1972, a trademark that he joked enables him to leap tall buildings and "do things I didn't know I could do."

Then again, what he's done to get to this point is pretty remarkable.

Upon graduating from college in 1971, Khan went to work at Flex-N-Gate as an engineering manager. He left in 1978 to start his own company, Bumper Works, and two years later bought his former employer. Now his privately held company is a major manufacturer of bumper systems for pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles built in North America. Revenue last year topped $3 billion, and Khan is believed to be a billionaire himself.

He tried buying the St. Louis Rams last year before landing this deal in late November. Now, he's officially part of the NFL's ownership club, starting right away with the other items on the agenda of this long-planned meeting, although he joked "I've got my training wheels on" because the transfer won't be completely official for a few more weeks.

The league's finance committee formally approved Khan's bid last week. So when the agenda item came up Wednesday, there wasn't a single question, or a single dissenting vote.

"I think that's a good sign," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said. "It's certainly an endorsement of his ownership."

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones called the Jaguars sale bittersweet because the league is bidding farewell to Weaver. However, Jones praised Khan for his "commitment, his passion and his skill."

"(Weaver) was a real asset to the league, but he did it right and he really brought a very qualified person to the table in Mr. Khan," Jones said. "It takes some skill to come from where he came from to be where he is today. You add that to your (NFL) ownership group, and we've gotten better. ... The more people we can have sitting around those tables in there that have wanted it real bad, that have a paid a high price to get in, and have a vision of how to grow the pie, the better the NFL will be. "

To Jacksonville fans, the biggest questions are his commitment to keeping the team in their city and to turning around a franchise that's struggling in the standings. He made it clear that he's passionate about both.

"This is a partnership, really, with the fans," Khan said. "I am committed obviously to the rebirth, the reinvigoration, doing whatever it takes to put a winner on the field to make Wayne and the other Jacksonvillians proud."

He will be in Jacksonville this weekend to start meeting with fans and sponsors. He and Weaver also will discuss the process of hiring a new coach; Weaver fired Jack Del Rio on Nov. 29, the same day he announced the deal with Khan.

Gary Kriss' legal woes continue | Politics on the Hudson

Gary Kriss, a former aide to the Westchester County Board of Legislators, was only fined $1,694 to settle two counts of theft for using his public office for personal purposes, but he rang up at least $35,000 in legal bills defending himself.

That?s the amount he owes Aiello & Cannick of Maspeth, N.Y., which filed a lawsuit against him in the state Supreme Court on Dec. 7, accusing Kriss of breach of contract.

The law firm is asking the court to order Kriss to pay $35,000 plus interest from June 16, 2010, the day of his sentencing, to the present.

Attorney Robert Aiello defended Kriss during his trial. Kriss, chief adviser to former county Board chair Bill Ryan, was sentenced on misdemeanor theft-of-services charges.

Kriss came under fire after a June 1, 2008, report in The Journal News found he had spent thousands of taxpayer dollars on books, software and electronics. The purchases included Hollywood scriptwriting software, a how-to program on Manga style cartooning, and a Kindle, with some of the items shipped to his South Salem home.

The controversy later prompted the 17-member county board to adopt changes in board spending and oversight policies.

Kriss was never charged with wrongdoing in relation to his county expenses, but was initially charged with four misdemeanors accusing him of having county graphics information technology specialist Sarah O?Brien work on personal projects for him and his wife, Patricia.

Among the projects that prosecutors said O?Brien worked on were a flow chart relating to Yale Divinity School, where Patricia Kriss was a student, and work relating to a referendum for the Ridgefield, Conn., Library.
